Refugee Community Center
This was the architectural intervention for a larger academic project proposal of the resettlement of Syrian refugees to Oakland, CA. The project serves as a space for gathering, cultural exchange, and community-building for the refugee population and with the broader public. The design is centered on a courtyard typology reimagined for a contemporary Californian context. Programs include an international grocery, restaurant/bakery highlighting Syrian foods, a language acquisition center, a library with resources, and a courtyard for connecting.
I used ArcGIS to identify potential opportunity sites in Oakland for the community center based on vacant/empty lots that were near schools, healthcare, and public transportation. Placing the site in proximity to these resources is critical for the ease of resettlement of refugees.
